DANCE PHYSIOTHERAPY

Feel free to dance.

Dance is a physically and mentally demanding exhibition of rigorous athleticism. It calls for extraordinary coordination, flexibility and endurance that can only be achieved with discipline and training. If precision is compromised, even for a split second, the consequences can prove devastating.

Since injuries are common among dancers, it’s no secret that many turn to physiotherapy. Physiotherapy is a journey to restore or maintain our ability to move freely. As a dancer and physiotherapist, I understand the intense feelings and possible setbacks that come with an injury.

Within treatment, I also use proper dance terminology — so we can communicate with more clarity.

Dance physiotherapy may include…

  • Dance-Specific Subjective and Objective Exams

  • Customized Treatment Plans, Tailored for Dancers

  • Dance Postures and Technique Strategy Evaluation and Optimization

  • Dance-Specific Exercises

  • Manual Therapy

  • Contemporary Acupuncture

  • Therapeutic Ultrasound

  • Therapeutic Taping

  • Self-Taping as Indicated

  • Activity Modification Recommendations

  • Dance-Specific Education

  • Dance-Specific Core and Pelvic Health Treatment

Don’t let an injury or natural changes in your body stop you from enjoying the freeing power of dance. Whether you want to recover from an injury or proactively work to achieve your full potential, I look forward to helping you.

When would someone need dance physiotherapy?

When a dancer gets injured and wants to return to dance as fast as possible.

When a dancer wants tips and training to prevent injuries.

When preparing to elevate training loads.

When looking for dance-specific advice or treatment regarding in-season management of certain repetitive strain injuries.

When a dancer wants to improve turnout, flexibility, strength for high leg extensions, balance/stability, alignment, power for jumps, core strength or other aspects of dance.

When an adolescent dancer goes through rapid growth spurts and suddenly experiences changes in flexibility, balance stability or height of leg extensions.

When dance training volumes lessen (such as in summertime) and dancers want to use the time to work on staying in shape for the next season, work to improve an aspect of their dancing, or want personalized injury prevention exercises to work on.

When a young ballet dancer wonders if they are ready to start pointe work.

Dance physiotherapy sessions are held in Oakville, ON. Virtual dance physiotherapy is available to residents of Ontario who can't meet in person for any reason (permanent or temporary).

“Both of my daughters are dancers and they have both been to see Jennifer and she is amazing. She really understands how the body works and why it works a certain way. She took the time to understand their past history before starting any treatment, and made sure it would help and not hinder any of their dance activities. I would highly recommend her to anyone!”

TESTIMONIALS

“Jen Denys is extremely knowledgeable and has a very bright and optimistic demeanour. She has been extremely beneficial in working with me, my children and many of my dance students at Balletomane. She has a very kind nature and explains with detail what you need to do to recover and avoid injury in the future. She does this with genuine understanding, concern and respect. She is a very aware physiotherapist and I highly recommend Jen.”

“Jennifer has been uniquely instrumental in supporting my high calibre pre-professional dancers as she's a cornerstone of rehabilitation and education. Her recovery plans and understanding of the ongoing demands of a training and performing athlete make her the ideal voice from the perspective of the dancer, parent and coach. Her ability to communicate dance-specific injury prevention lands perfectly; it's nuanced with personal power and passion for longevity in the art. Jennifer's voice is truly a rare and invaluable influence in the physiotherapy world.”
